Working Group 5

3D technology is expected to change the way we interact with other people, audiovisual information, and technology. This will in turn affect many domains of modern society, ranging from entertainment, education, medicine, engineering, etc. However, wider acceptance of 3D technology is conditioned by solving challenges on the levels of technology, human factors and community/organization.

The 3D End-User Devices Working Group (WG5 ) concentrates its coordination efforts on end-user devices, the visible part of the 3D media system, namely: 3D Video devices, 3D Audio devices and 3D Interaction devices.

One highly intriguing and also commercially interesting category of novel displays is mid-air 3D displays, which enable projected images to float in free space and interact with them naturally. The visual quality of the current 3D displays is adequate for some applications, but it is a major limitation for the full exploitation of these technologies.

Members of WG5 represent a wide range of expertise on various related fields:

  • 3D display R&D and manufacturing experience
  • 3D rendering algorithms and computing systems
  • Design of new applications / Interfacing existing 3D applications to 3D displays
  • User studies of 3D stereoscopic interaction
  • Design of new applications for 3DTV
  • Design of new modalities for interaction with 3D video
  • Signal and image processing for 3D
  • Coding theory
  • Computer graphics & vision
  • Gesture based interaction / identification
  • Natural user interaction with 3D content
  • Virtual view generation from camera images
  • Visual optimization of autostereoscopic displays
  • 3D video filtering

Coordination and cooperation between the research performing partners will bring us closer to the ultimate aim of what the general public or media often describes as “holographic” or “StarWars” display.
